‘Robber ringleader’ killed in Feni ‘gunfight’

A suspected leader of a gang of robbers was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at the Italy market area under Songazi upazila in Feni on Friday night. The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam alias ‘Bhagina’ Kalam, the leader of ‘Bhagina Kalam Bahini’.
Acting on a tip-off that members of the robber gang gathered in the Italy market area, the elite force conducted a drive there around 7:45pm, said squadron leader Shafayat Jamil, commanding officer of RAB-7. Sensing the presence of the RAB men, the gang opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, he said. After a gunfight, members of the gang retreated. Later, RAB men detained bullet-hit Kalam from the spot. The RAB recovered one pistol, one foreign revolver, a one-shooter gun, seven bullets and four sharp weapons from the spot. Officer-in-Charge of Sonagzi Police Station Humyan Kabir said Kalam had 30 cases filed against his name including those for murder, robbery, terrorism and ransom incidents.
