Thousands of people of all ages formed a three-kilometre long human chain on Tuesday afternoon at Balodmara Kheyaghat point under Roumari upazila in Kurigram demanding construction of a flood control embankment to save the upazila from erosion of the Brahmaputra, reports BSS.
A discussion was also arranged there on the occasion with President of Roumari Upazila River Erosion Prevention Committee Abdul Kader in the chair.
Local Member of the Parliament (MP) from Kurigram-4 constituency Md Ruhul Amin, former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Zakir Hossain, Roumari upazila Chairman Mujibur Rahman Bangabashi, AL leader Haji Murad, addressed the discussion.
General Secretary of Roumari Upazila River Erosion Prevention Committee Abu Hanif Master, General Secretary of Kurigram Press Club Shyamol Bhowmick and General Secretary of Roumari Press Club Amir Hossain also spoke.
The speakers demanded for construction of the five-kilometre flood protection embankment from Ghughumari to Foluar Char points before the commencement of the next rainy season to save the whole area from river erosion.
Former MP Zakir Hossain said hundreds of houses, vast tracts of arable lands, properties of many villages under Char Shoulmari, Bandober, Jadurchar, Noyarhat and Astomirchar unions of Roumari upazila might be devoured if the embankment is not built soon.
Ruhul Amin, MP, called upon the present pro-people government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for taking necessary steps to save the whole area of Roumari upazila from erosion of the mighty Brahmaputra.
