A High Court bench is likely to hear today (Wednesday) a petition filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia challenging the legality of the trial proceedings of a sedition case against her. The HC bench comprising Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan might hold hearing on the petition, Deputy Attorney General Md Bashirullah said.
The BNP chief filed the petition with the HC on January 5 through her lawyer seeking a stay order on the proceedings of the case which was lodged for her comments on the count of 1971 martyrs. The petition said that the Supreme Court lawyer Momtaz Uuddin Ahmed Mehedi, who is the plaintiff of the case, has no right to file such a case, as he is not a government official. There is no ingredient of sedition in her comments for which the case was filed, according to the petition.
