3 die as speedboats capsize
Madaripur: The bodies of three people were recovered from the Padma river near Kawrakandi ghat in Shibchar upazila on Saturday after two speedboats capsized in the river on Friday night following a collision, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Hosne Ara Lipi, 32, wife of police constable Haider Hossain of Bhanga upazila in Faridpur, Monwar Mridha, 18, son of Milon Mridha of Barisal district, and Ibrahim Madbar, 20, son of Rahim Madbar of Taltala area of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur.
Police and witnesses said a Kawrakandi-bound speedboat from Shimulia and another speedboat sank in the river following a collision between the two near Kawrakandi ghat on Friday morning due to dense fog.
All but the trio managed to swim ashore.
A rescue team of police, fire brigades and divers started their drive on Saturday morning and recovered the bodies of Mowar and Ibrahim from near the spot around 5pm.
The team also recovered the body of Lipi from the same area around 6pm.
106 families get new power connection in Jessore
About 106 residential houses of Mahatabnagar village under Hariharnagar union in Monirampur upazila of the district have been brought under rural electrification network on Saturday evening by Jessore Palli Bidyut Samity (JPBS), reports BSS.
Local lawmaker Swapon Bhattyacharya inaugurated the electrification network at a simple function as the chef guest while educationist Abdus Satter was in the chair.
General Manager of Jessore Palli Bidyut Samity-2 Abdur Rashid Mridha, Bhojgati UP Chairman Abdur Razzak, Hariharnagar UP Chairman Gazi Abdus Satter, Rohita UP Chairman Ansar Ali were present at the function, among others.
Dev fair begins tomorrow
FARIDPUR: A three-day 'Development Fair' will begin from tomorrow at local Ambica Memorial ground here to inform the grass root people about the successes achieved by the government both nationally and internationally, reports BSS.
At a press conference held this afternoon at the Deputy Commissioner's conference room DC Umme Salma Tanzia informed that the fair is a part of countrywide programme and the Prime Minister through video conference will inaugurate the event at 3 PM tomorrow simultaneously.
The deputy commissioner informed that through the fair ten mega-projects of the Prime Minister will be highlighted.
A total of 80 stalls of government and semi-government departments will be set up at the fair to project various development works and progresses done by the government to achieve the goal of becoming a middle income country by 2021 and a developed one in 2041.
