Hijra killed, 10 hurt in Noakhali clash

A Hijra was killed and 10 people, including six Hijras, were injured in a clash in Natun Bazar area of Companiganj upazila of the district yesterday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Lucky Akther, 24, of the upazila.
Officer-in-Charge of Companiganj police station Sajadur Rahman said a group of hijras appeared at the wedding ceremony of Babul’s daughter at Char Kakra village last month and demanded Tk 1,000 as toll. Babul paid Tk 500 on that day. The hijra group again went to the house of Babul yesterday to bring the rest amount of Tk 500.
Following an altercation over the money, the hijras launched an attack on Babul’s house in the afternoon and ransacked it.
However, villagers swooped on the hijras in Natun Bazar area and beat them indiscriminately, leaving Lucky Akther, Chumki, 22, Sohagi, 25, Sonali, 20, Jahangir, 21, Monoara, 25, and four others injured.
The injured were taken to Companiganj Upazila Health Complex.
Lucky was shifted to Noakhali General Hospital where she died.
As the death news spread around, hijras gathered in front of Companiganj police station around 1pm and blocked Basurhat-Chaprashira road for half an hour.
Sub-inspector of Companiganj police station Sazidur Rahman said police arrested Master, 16, of Char Kakra village in the upazila, in this connection.
