50 hurt as traders, transport workers clash with BGB

Over 50 people were injured, including six with bullets, in a clash between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members, and transport workers and traders in Srimangal upazila headquarters under Moulvibazar district yesterday, UNB reports. Witnesses said local transport workers beat a BGB officer around 5:30pm following an altercation when he went to 'Pansi Restaurant' to take food, leaving him injured.
On information, BGB members from Sector-9 headquarters rushed in and beat traders, transport workers and locals. They also allegedly vandalised several shops and vehicles. The clash ensued when the traders and transport workers encountered them. The agitated traders and workers also blocked roads in different places of the upazila. The situation returned to normalcy around 7:30pm when Deputy Commissioner Tofail Ahmed rushed in and assured them of forming a probe committee and giving the compensation.
Officer-in-charge of Srimangal Police Station Mahbubur Rahman said the situation now remained under control. The injured were sent to local hospital for treatment, he added.
