Miscreants vandalised 20 idols in three temples in Jamai Bazar Dhumuria area of Tungipara upazila in Gopalganj early yesterday, reports UNB. Locals said the miscreants swooped on 'Durga Temple', 'Hari temple' and 'Radha-gobindha temple' early in the morning and damaged 20 idols.
Local Hindu community people staged demonstrations in the area protesting the attack. Deputy commissioner of the district Md Mukhlesur Rahman Sarkar visited the spot. Meanwhile, police arrested two youths-Sabur and Shoeb--in this connection. Superintendent of police of Gopalganj distrct SM Imran Hossain told The Independent yesterday that a group of miscreants had vandalised the idols in three temples. “So far we have arrested two miscreants in this connection. Besides, a case has been lodged at the local police station,” he added. Mahamudul Haque, officer-in-charge of Tungipara Police Station, said the incident might have been taken place following enmity over setting up a shop in the area.
