The ruling Awami League (AL) has formed a 10-member committee led by HT Imam, the prime minister’s political adviser, for preparing a draft of proposals on the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC). The ruling party will place the proposals on the EC reforms during its talks with President Abdul Hamid on January 11.The committee was formed during a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee at party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Ganabhaban yesterday.
President Abdul Hamid invited the AL leaders to Bangabhaban on January 11 to discuss the issue of the Election Commission reconstitution. The invitation is a part of the president’s initiative to hold talks with registered political parties on the reconstitution of the EC, as the tenure of present EC will expire in February.Yesterday’s meeting also finalised the names of the party delegation that will hold talks with the president.
AL chief Sheikh Hasina will lead the delegation that will include Abdul Matin Khashru, Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Abdul Baset Majumder, Mohammad Zamir, Dipu Moni, Abdur Razzak, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Rashedul Alam, Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan and the party’s newly elected general secretary Obaidul Quader.
Emerging from the meeting, AL presidium member Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya told this correspondent that the meeting mostly discussed the issue of the EC reconstitution and finalised the draft committee and the delegation that will call on the president.Marufa Akter Poppy, central committee member of the party, said that the meeting also discussed the Suhrawardy Udyan rally to be held on January 10 to mark the home coming day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.Chaired by Sheikh Hasina, the meeting was attended by Obaidul Quader, the members of the AL central executive committee, presidium and the advisory council.
