Jan 19: HC

The High Court (HC) yesterday fixed January 19 for the submission of the judicial inquiry report over the alleged humiliation of headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta in Narayanganj that had sparked a mass uproar, reports UNB. A two-member High Court bench comprising Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order after a hearing on the matter yesterday. Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Saju said the court granted a two-week time as the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka is currently outside the country.
On August 10, the HC ordered the authorities concerned to conduct a judicial inquiry into the incident rejecting a probe report submitted by Narayanganj police.
The court ordered the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka to conduct an inquiry and submit the [rpbe report. On May 13, locals allegedly beat Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Bandar area of Narayanganj, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments.
At one stage, local lawmaker AKM Salim Osman forced him to do sit-ups holding his earlobes. The incident was reported by mass media and also went viral on the social media, triggering huge public outcry across the country over the teacher’s humiliation. On May 17, the school authorities suspended Shyamal for allegedly making statements criticising religion. In the face of huge outrage over the suspension, the government on May 19 dissolved the school's managing committee leading to the teacher's automatic reinstatement.
