Police ‘extort’ money from vehicles

Some dishonest policemen are allegedly engaged in extorting extra money from vehicles ahead of Eid-ul-fitr, claimed drivers.
Illegal tolls are collected from different vehicles, including buses, trucks and other transports at several points on Dhaka-Sylhet highway, Panchdona-Tongi road and Dhaka-Monohardi road in Narsingdi.
According to some drivers, several teams of traffic police have  been realising a large amount of toll in the name of checking documents.
The toll against each microbus is Tk 100 to Tk 200, each Nasimon (a battery-run three-wheeler) Tk 100 to Tk 200 and each bus and truck Tk 300 to Tk 500.  The so-called drive goes on from 9 am to 5 pm during day time and 6 pm to 6 am during the night.
Sometime, police use ‘sources’ to collect toll.
Additional Police Super Hasibul Alam denied the allegation and said they launched several drives on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway and other roads to prevent accidents and robbery.
The police officer said he would take action against any policeman on specific information of illegal toll collection.
