Participants in a divisional dialogue on campaign for sustainable social arbitration demanded in changing mindset and ensuring neutrality of arbitrators in introducing and practicing the system. The programme was organised by Wave Foundation and Nagarik Uddyag with assistance from Community Legal Services funded by UK Aid and Centre for Effective Dispute Resolutions yesterday at the conference room of deputy commissioner Barisal.
Deputy Commissioner Barisal Dr Gazi Saifuzzaman attended the programme as chief guest and right activists Advocate Manabendra Batabayal, SM Iqbal and former lawmaker Principal Abdur Rashid Khan attended the programme as special guests.
Tapan Kumar Saha, assistant executive director, Nazrul Islam, campaign coordinator of Wave foundation, Khan Md Shahid, chief coordinator of Madaripur Legal Aid Foundation, Supravat Haldar, chairman, Gulam Mustafa, teacher of law department at Barisal University, Shahnewaz Shahin, Barisal Sadar upazila vice chairman, placed key notes of the discussion. The discussants said coordination between administration, law and judiciary, enacting one family code for all and arbitration without any interference of third party, needed to make the Social Arbitration System sustainable.
Ensuring neutrality of the arbitrators, checking corruption and biasness, self initiatives, gender balanced empowerment of women also needed for introducing and practicing social arbitration system sustainable, participants of the dialogue opined.
The programme was conducted by Zakir Hossain, executive director of Nagarik Uddyag and attended by more than fifty persons from different classes and professions in interactive discussions.
