Netrakona: In a unique show of love and affection for the Bangabandhu family, a union parishad member in Durgapur upazila has constructed two bridges after the names of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a remote area selling his own land property, reports UNB.
M Habibur Rahman, a member of Kullagara union parishad, built the bridges—‘Bangabandhu Bridge’ and ‘SheikhHasinaBridge’—connecting the Shibganj Bazar-Sohagipur road spending Tk 32 lakh.
The 120-foot ‘Bangabandhu Bridge’ was constructed over the Katuakuri canal and the ‘Sheikh Hasina Bridge’ built over the Kaliaputi canal is 85 feet in length.
Now, the UP member expects the Prime Minister to formally open the two bridges.
Habibur Rahman, who was reelected in the recently held UP elections, said some over 10,000 people of 6-7 villages of the remote hilly union have to use the Shibganj Bazar-Sohagipur road every day for various purposes. However, they had to face great difficulties for lack of bridges over the two beels as no government in the last 45 years took any initiative to construct any bridge.
“I took the initiative to construct the bridges to assuage the sufferings of the local people and as part of building a Golden Bangla as dreamt by Bangabandhu,” he said.
The UP member said he completed the construction of the two bridges with earnings of his entire life and selling his inherited property.
Habib’s father Abdul Karim, a local farmer, inaugurated the work on the two bridges in 2014.
He has, however, died by the time.
With a smile on his face, the UP member said the bridges will improve the life standard of the local people.
“With the construction of the two bridges, local people can bring their produces and vegetables to local bazaars in time while little children can go to their schools easily and patients and pregnant women can easily avail themselves of treatment at the upazila headquarters,” he said.
Former chairman of Kullagara union parishad Harunur Rashid, Maulana Habibur Rahman, Osman Goni, Mokhlesur Rahman, Abdur Rashid, Dulal Miah and Mizanur Rahman of the locality said no public representative took any step to ease the sufferings of the local people.
