Mabia Akhter Simanta again brought honour for the country as she clinched a gold medal in weightlifting in the 4th Qatar International Cup held in Doha on Friday. Her compatriot Jahura Akhter Reshma also clinched gold in the competition in a different weightlifting category. Interestingly, none of the athletes were vetted by the weightlifting federation due to internal conflicts and the lifters participated in the Qatar tournament without informing the federation officials. Former general secretary of the federation Mohiuddin Ahmed helped the lifters to take part in the competition. Reportedly, the lifters’ participation in the tournament without informing the officials concerned has irked the federation officials and they are unhappy with the lifters for this. Mabia Akhter, who was the sole gold medal winner among Bangladeshi participants in weightlifting competition during the last edition of SA Games held in India, grabbed her gold in the 63kg discipline while Jahura Akhter won gold in the 53kg category.
