Fare distribution of Tk 10 per kg rice to the poor under the government “Food-Friendly Programme” in Angaria union parishad of Shariatpur Sadar can be questioned when it comes to light that a dead person has been enlisted as a recipient of the support. Shahjalal Khandaker, son of Majid Khandaker of ward no. 9 of the union, was enlisted as a recipient of the Tk 10 kg rice support, though in reality the person passed away five years ago.
In addition, despite having the name of her deceased husband in the list, Rahima Begum has not yet received any rice from the programme. She does not even know her deceased husband’s name is in the list. Another enlisted recipient Shahinur Begum, wife of Jahangir Talukder of the area, said her husband lives in Kuwait and her family is solvent enough. She drew rice from the programme only once.
On the other hand, Sajeda Begum, wife of Ataur Rahman of the locality, said despite being enlisted under the programme, they have never availed themselves of the opportunity.
Moreover, despite being in the same family, Rafikul Islam Khan, Jabbar Khan and Billal Hossein Khan, relatives of a dealer, have been enlisted under the programme.
According to official records, 1,344 people are enlisted for the rice distribution programme at Angaria union. But the solvent people are alleged to get the ration instead of the poor ones. When asked, Jewel Parvez, secretary of the union, said he was not in the list-preparation committee and cannot say anything on the matter. Upazila executive officer Ziaur Rahman said he has been informed about the irregularities.
