Sonagazi upazila livestock office and Hospital in Feni was declared abandoned by the Department of Livestock Services around 15 years ago due to its deplorable condition. But administrative and other activities are still going on in the same building under serious threat of accident.
According to hospital official sources, considering its central position, a Thana Veterinary Dispensary was built on 67 decimals of land at Baktarmunshi Bazar under Mongolkandi union in the upazila in 1963. Later, it was turned into upazila livestock office without conducting any development and extension works. But, in 2000, the building was declared unfit for running administrative and other activities.
District Livestock Officer Abu Al Monsur said there are total 11 posts including two first class ones, but seven posts including three veterinary field assistants, one upazila livestock assistants, one office assistant, one dresser and one MLSS have remained vacant for long. While visiting the building, this correspondent found that plasters from roof of the ground floor have been displaced, doors and windows nearly shattered, and the rooms hardly usable. Besides, office furniture, cattle sheds and boundary walls were found in dilapidated conditions.
Abu Ahammad of Charmajlishpur village in the upazila alleged, “Whenever we go to the hospital along with our ailed cattle heads, there is hardly any doctor to attend the cattle very often. Sometimes, required medicines are unavailable, too.”
Abul Hashem of Char Chandina village said “Since the hospital is situated at the edges of the upazila, we face setback while taking our cattle there. Besides, the veterinary doctors do not travel across the areas due to substandard communication system in the upazila. As a result, we have to consult with local quakes for the treatment.”
Sonagazi Upazila Livestock Officer ABM Saifuzzaman said, “We informed the matter to higher authorities but no practical steps have been taken yet. Finding no other alternative we are running our activities in the deplorable condition. Besides, there are no accommodation facilities for hospital officials and staffs.” District Livestock Officer Abu Al Monsur said tender for building a new building for the veterinary hospital was floated, but the process has been stopped for unknown reasons.
