‘Re: Zero – Starting life in another world’ – was undoubtedly one of the most hyped anime of spring 2016. Each episode delivered excellent cliffhangers, which didn’t fail to keep the viewers at the edge of their seats.
The plot was strong enough to keep you attached to the series from the very first minutes. Even though you may find some similarities with the setup of Sword Art Online or KonoSuba, the storyline is quite captivating. You would be right if you think this is one of those ‘person in a different world’ genre, but the thrill you will find in this anime is much different from the others.
The story revolves around Natsuki Subaru, an ordinary high school student. On his way home from the convenience store, literally in the blink of an eye, he finds himself in a fantasy world. At first, he think it is hallucination due to his marathon gaming at home. The new world is nothing less than his video games. The people, the animals, currency, language _ everything is different from the world of his origin. There is magic, elves, spirits and many more with which Subaru is not familiar at all. Not long after his arrival, he gets cornered into a back alley by some local thugs. It is a silver haired half-elf, Satella, who comes to his rescue. Satella was initially searching for her lost insignia. So, Subaru embarks on his mission to help her find it.
The plot thickens when they encounter the person responsible for the theft. Satella and Subaru get brutally murdered even before realising the danger. But the story doesn’t end there. Unbeknownst to him, Subaru finds himself at the same place where he first set foot in this world.History inexplicably repeats itself where Subaru again confronts the thugs and meets Satella. It is only Subaru who remembers the past, but he can’t tell his secret to anyone, even if he wanted to. It is now Subaru who must deal with the future, setting his steps wisely without repeating the same mistakes as before.
As the story progresses, you will surely love the characters. This is one of those animes where you will even love the villains! Then there are the twin sisters, Ram and Rem. I did not find any one who didn’t like Ram and Rem. The opening songs are quite catchy. The animation is satisfactory and the voice acting is superb. Adapted from a light novel, this anime will not fail to entertain you, and may even place itself on your list of top anime.
