A petition was filed yesterday with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 seeking its directive to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury for his comments over the tribunal proceedings.
Freedom fighter Monoranjan Ghoshal and Kamal Pasha Chowdhury, organisers of Ganajagaran Mancha, activists FM Shahin, Ali Asgar and Nazrul Islam jointly filed the petition with the registrar’s office of the tribunal.
Later, tribunal registrar Shahidul Alam forwarded the petition to the ICT-2 for further proceedings.
After accepting the petition, the ICT-2 fixed Tuesday (today) for hearing on the petition. This was the third contempt petition against Zafrullah Chowdhury.
Earlier, on June 10, the tribunal found Zafrullah guilty of contempt of court and imprisoned him at the courtroom for an hour for criticising punishment of Bangladesh-based UK journalist David Bergman.
The tribunal also ordered him to pay Tk 5,000 in fine within seven days, in default of which he would have to serve one month in prison.
Advocate Khan Mohammad Shameem Aziz, counsel for the petitioners, told reporters that following the June 10 sentence against him, Zafrullah made some derogatory remark about tribunal again, which is tantamount to the contempt of court. That’s why the petitioners filed the petition with the tribunal against him, he added.
