Extradite killer of Bangabandhu

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy has urged the US authorities to extradite the killer of his grandfather Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He made the call in an article published by the New York Times yesterday. Saying that one of his family’s assassins, Rashed Chowdhury, lives at liberty in the United States for years, he highlighted several reasons validating Chowdhury’s extradition from the US soil and urged the US to do so immediately. “Despite the efforts of the Bangladesh government, Mr. Chowdhury remains hiding in plain sight; the American government should stop sheltering him,” Joy wrote in his article “The U.S. Must Extradite My Grandfather’s Killer”.  “To the best of our knowledge, Mr. Chowdhury has not been granted refugee status; therefore, he is not immune from extradition proceedings,” Joy said, adding, “There are no grounds for further delay in extraditing him”. Giving a background to the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu and his family members in 1975, Joy concluded his article saying that the United States should respond to Bangladesh’s repeated pleas to conclude the matter, so that justice might be done.
