Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque will leave Dhaka for New Delhi today to prepare the ground work for the Prime Minister’s visit to India expected to take place in the second half of next month, said sources concerned.
On Wednesday, they said, the foreign secretary will hold a meeting with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar to talk about the agenda of discussions between Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi.
As part of the preparations of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit, an inter-ministerial meeting was held on Sunday at the Foreign Ministry with the participation of representatives from different ministries and department, said the sources.
The foreign secretary presided over the meeting that reviewed the current status of the matters related to Bangladesh-India ties and took note of the developments after the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, last year, they said.
About the topics of discussions between Hasina and
Modi, the sources said that both Dhaka and New Delhi are still working on it and officials from two countries are trying to make the visit a success.
The issues likely to top the agenda include Teesta water sharing agreement, security cooperation, trade and commerce, connectivity and cooperation in power sector, they said.
Of course, they added that Bangladesh will press on the conclusion of the Teesta water sharing agreement.
Given the changed scenario, it is likely that there will be an added emphasis on security cooperation between the two neighbours, said the sources.
Among new areas, issues relating to Ganges Barrage might come up for discussion, they said.
Referring to a recent visit of an Indian team on Ganges Barrage, they added that the indications are positive.
The agenda of discussions will take shape after the meeting between the two Foreign Secretaries on Wednesday, said the sources.
On the date of visit, they said that earlier it was all but confirmed that the visit would take place in the first week of December, but now it appears that the visit will take place during the second half of December.
It is highly likely that the two-day visit will take place between December 17 and 24, they added.
This visit is a return visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came to Bangladesh in June, 2015.
Earlier, Prime Minister Hasina visited Delhi in January, 2010.
