Protecting rights of mango farmers stressed

RAJSHAHI: Highlighting the existing prospects of mango farming and its economic importance, speakers at a view-exchange meeting unequivocally called for protecting the legitimate rights and interests of the mango farmers, reports BSS.
They observed adopting a time-fitting policy for mango production and its marketing has become an urgent need to prevent the post-harvest unexpected wastage of the fruit estimated to be more than 40 percent. Concerted efforts of policy planners, producers, entrepreneurs, traders and other government and non-government organisations are also very important to this end.
Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) organised the meeting on Friday in its conference hall discussing ways and means on how to form cooperative society among the mango farmers. Rajshahi Agro-food Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited supported the meeting. With BMDA Chairman Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury in the chair, Akhter Jahan, MP, and executive director of BMDA Abdur Rashid addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively. Akhtar Jahan said there is no alternative to brining all the mango farmers under requisite training for promotion of modern technologies for making the mango harvesting and marketing process safe and hygienic.
She mentioned that modern technologies need to be promoted commercially in mango orchards in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts to protect mango from pest attack besides facilitating the farmers to get quality and better yields.
