Two cases have been filed against 1,200 unknown people in connection with Sunday’s vandalism at Hindu temples and houses at Brahmanbaria. The rampage began allegedly over a Facebook post demeaning the Holy Kaaba. Armed with weapons, an unruly mob went berserk, and demolished a number of Hindu temples and ransacked nearly 100 houses on Sunday. At least 20 people, including several priests, were injured. However, the situation at Bramanbaria is under control and law enforcement personnel are patrolling there round-the-clock to preclude any untoward incident, police said.
“Police are patrolling 10 strategic points of Haripur union of Nasirnagar upazila round-the-clock to preclude any untoward incident.
Two cases have been filed against 1,000–1,200 unknown persons. Besides, several other cases are being processed,” Brahmanbaria (Sadar circle) assistant superintendent of police, Abdul Karim, told The Independent yesterday.
At least eight people had been arrested so far, he added.
He said police had collected video footage of the area where the attack occurred on Sunday. Karim also said a protest rally was held in which the deputy commissioner, superintendent of police, upazila chairman and other members of the local elite took part.
Although police have said law enforcement personnel have been deployed in the area, locals are still living in fear.
Human rights group Ain O Salish Kendra yesterday condemned the incident and expressed sympathy for the affected families. It demanded that perpetrators be brought to book immediately.
