Habiganj: A court yesterday sentenced five people to death and 27 others to different jail terms for killing a farmer in Nabiganj upazila in 2002, reports UNB.
The condemned convicts are Anis, Foras, Jamshed, Bazlu and Nur Islam, all residents of Boaljur village in Dighalbagh upazila. Jamshed, Bazlu and Nur were tried in absentia as they were absconding.
According to the prosecution, Nur along with his followers attacked farmer Moktadir Ali as he protested after Nur’s cattle foraged his ripe paddy field, leaving him dead on the spot on February 20, 2002.
Later, victim’s brother Mosahid Ali filed a case against 40 people in this connection with Nabiganj Police Station.Police submitted chargesheet against 35 people after investigation. Among the 35 people, three have already died.
After examining all the records and 16 witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mafroza Pervin handed down the verdict.
