Three children drown

Three children, including two siblings, drowned while talking bath in a pond at Mamunshia village under Kotchandpur upazila of the district yesterday afternoon.
The deceased are Ria, 10, her brother Nirab, 9, both are children of Joynal Mandal and Murad, 9, son of Nani Mandal of the same village. They were students of Mamunshia Government Primary School.
Police quoting family members said the children drowned while talking bath in the pond.
After a hectic search, local people recovered the bodies of the three
children at noon, said Officer-in-charge of Kotchandpur Police Station Ahmed Kabir Hossain.
An unnatural death (UD) case was filed in this connection.
3 JMB men jailed for 10 yrs

A special tribunal yesterday sentenced three Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) activists to 10 years rigorous imprisonment each in a case filed under Arms and Explosive Act.
The convicts are Abdur Rahim alias Zahid Hossain of Debidwar upazila in Comilla, Delwar Hossain and Yunus Ali of Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari.
According to the prosecution, they were arrested from a JMB training camp on September 27, 2009 at Shantipur area of Matiranga upazila along with explosives.
Court officials said Special Tribunal Judge M Enamul Haque Bhuiyan handed down the verdict.
The convicts were also fined Tk 2,000 each and in default they would have to serve two more years in jail.
Elephant ‘electrocuted’
Sherpur: A wild elephant reportedly died after getting electrocuted in a trap at Tawakucha village in Jhinaigati upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.
Quoting locals, Tawakucha beat officer of the Forest Department MD Ashraful Alam said the elephant died around 4.30am.
The reason behind death could not be ascertained. The elephant might have been died being trapped in an electric trap.
Earlier on October 1 last, an elephant was found dead in a paddy field in Panbor area of the village.
Meanwhile, nine people have been killed in separate elephant attacks in the upazila in last one and half month.
Recently, locals started using electric traps to prevent the straying of wild elephants into their habitation.
‘JMB member’ arrested
Sirajganj: Detectives in a drive arrested a suspected female member of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh from Koddar Mor in Sadar upazila on Sunday, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Aklima, 25, daughter of Abdul Aziz of Baraitala Pashchimpara in Kazipur upazila. She is suspected to be member of JMB’s ‘suicide squad’.
Waheduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of police, said tipped off, a team of the detectives conducted a drive in the area and arrested Aklima in the morning.
During primary interrogation, she confessed to her involvement in militant activities, the OC added.
2 Indian citizens held at border

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two Indian citizens from Gatipara border area of Benapole on Sunday night.
The arrestees were identified as Hafizur Rahman, 30, and Afjal Hossain, 12, both residents of South 24 Pargana in India.
Jahangir Alam, company commander of Doulatpur camp of 21-BGB Battalion, said acting on secret information, a team of the border force conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo at about 11 pm while they were trying to enter the Bangladesh territory without valid documents. The arrestees were handed over to Benapole Port Police Station. A case was filed in this connection.
Bridge on Kaliganga River opened

A 297 metre bridge on the Kaliganga River in the district was opened for traffic to connect the district headquarter with Harirampur upazila.
State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Zahid Malek Swapan, who represents the constituency as lawmaker in the Jatiya Sangsad opened the bridge at the Beuthaghat area on Sunday night.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) constructed the bridge at a cost of Tk 38, 78, 47,174.
The opening ceremony was marked by a public meeting at the site which was presided over by deputy commissioner Rashida Ferdouse and addressed, among others, by district Awami League president and district administrator Advocate Golam Mohiuddin, Mayor of Manikganj Gazi Quamrul Huda Selim, former mayor Ramjan Ali.
Sewing machines distributed

Eight sewing machines, three wheel chairs and 15 vans were distributed among the underprivileged people at a simple function at Thakurgaon Zila Parisad hall room yesterday afternoon.
Thakurgaon Zila Parisad organised the programme.
Administrator of Thakurgaon Zila Parisad Mohammad Sadek Kuraishi attended the programme as chief guest, while chief executive officer Monjurur Rahman presided over it.
Programme organising secretary of district Awami League ASM Golam Faruk Rubel and president of Thakurgaon Journalist Welfare Association Monsur Ali, were present, among others.
