Former election commissioner Sohul Hossain yesterday said the goodwill and sincerity of the Election Commission is enough to arrange elections in a free and fair manner, reports UNB.
“If the Commission wants, the polls must be held in a fair manner because the constitution bestowed unlimited power upon it to make elections fair,” he said addressing the closing ceremony of a training workshop for journalists in the capital.
Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) arranged the training workshop at its office for journalists covering elections.
Emphasizing media’s role in holding fair elections, the former election commissioner said the media alongside the Election Commission will have to play a neutral and responsible role in this regard.
Speaking at the function, DRU president Shakhawat Hossain Badasha said no action has been taken against those involved in assaulting journalists during the last city corporation elections.
He urged the EC to be  sincere for ensuring the security of journalists and facilitating access to information with a view to making election credible.
