Khadiza’s condition ‘a bit better’

The condition of Khadiza Akter Nargis, who was stabbed by BCL leader Badrul Alam in Sylhet last week, was now stable, doctors attending on her at Square Hospital in the city said yesterday. “We would like to take off her ventilator machine on a trial basis from Wednesday to see how she reacts. If she remains stable for 48 hours after removal of the ventilator, then we could say that she is improving,” said a doctor on condition of anonymity. The doctor said Khadiza was able to move her eyes and arms on Saturday. This has improved her chances of survival, he added.
The hospital, however, did not confirm the news officially. Rumana, a helpdesk officer at the hospital, said the doctors had not given them any new inputs on Khadiza’s condition to inform the media. On the other hand, Khadiza’s uncle Abdul Kuddus said her condition has not changed since the past two days. He appealed to the Prime Minister to send his niece abroad for better treatment.
The young woman was hacked at with a machete by Alam as she was coming out of an examination hall in a Sylhet university on October 3. Alam was allegedly angry at Khadiza for spurning his advances. The critically injured woman was operated upon at Square Hospital and put on life support system in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
