Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday aired a doubt whether a credible Election Commission (EC) can be formed by taking suggestions from BNP about it, reports UNB. “If their (BNP’s) suggestions are taken, we’ll have to form an Election Commission which will again make the voter list with fake voters. It’s my question whether you want it,” she said. Sheikh Hasina came up with the remarks at her press conference responding to a question from a journalist whether the government will take BNP’s suggestions over the formation of the next Election Commission to be formed in February next.
The press conference was held at her official residence Gonobhaban at 4pm on her recent visit to Canada and the USA. The tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led Election Commission will expire in February next.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Anisul Huq on September 15 hinted that a search committee will be formed to constitute the new Election Commission.
BNP has been calling upon the government to engage in dialogue with it and other parties over formation of a credible and EC to hold the next election in a free and fair manner.
