Dhaka Metropolitan of Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah yesterday said the police so far did not find any link between Piar Ahmed Akash, who was arrested in Malaysia, and the militant attack in Holey Artisan Bakery in the city's Gulshan area. “Primarily we did not find any evidence of involvement in any militant attacks against deported Akash. Malaysia police did not also officially inform us anything about his involvement in Gulshan attack. He was accused in an arms case in Feni and went to Malaysia to evade arrest," the DMP chief said. The police commissioner was addressing a debate program on "Role of Law Enforcement Agency to Prevent Militancy" as the chief guest on the eighth floor of the BFDC (Bangladesh Film Development Corporation) at Tejgaon in the capital. Debate for Democracy organised the program. “Malaysian police arrested Akash through Interpol and sent him back to Bangladesh,” he continued.
“The role of Bangladeshi law enforcers in combating militancy is being praised by the world,” he said, adding that police are now molding public opinion against militancy alongside conducting operations against the menace. Police have successfully foiled many attempts of terror attacks,” he added. Referring to technical and training assistance of the US for enhancing professional excellence, he said, “The Japanese government had expresses their desire to extend similar help to this end.”
The DMP chief distributed crests and certificates among the winners of the debate competition. Bangladesh University of Professionals won the competition representing the government side, defeating Bangladesh University as the opposition. Secretary General of the Debate for Democracy Mostafizur Rahman Khan conducted the function. Among others, DMP Joint Commissioner Krishna Pada Roy and ATN Bangla’s Senior Vice-President Tashik Ahmed spoke on the occasion.
