Investigators from Titas Gas have found some irregularities in how the gas connection was being used at Gazipur's Tampaco Foils Ltd factory, where 24 people were killed in a devastating fire on September 10. However, the investigators reported on Tuesday that no explosions took place due to any problem in the gas line, adding that the gas supply to the line was shut down within 10 minutes of receiving the distress call from the factory. Rana Akbar Haidari, chief of the Titas investigation team, told the Independent, “During our visit, we spotted an illegal boiler and an illegal buster at the factory. But, those did not cause any fire.” Tampaco got the gas connection in 2009, and it was approved to use 12,025 feet of gas for its three boilers and 12,360 feet of gas for the captive power plant, per day. Investigators visited the collapsed factory site with the help of Army and photographed different spots. They also collected some samples of the chemicals.
“We got some chemical samples that can not be available at the site and we got some abnormal temperature at the chemical storage room . So, our opinion is that there was a positive environment for the fire to spread.” “We can tell you that no evidence was found that indicated the gas connection was at fault,” the investigators from Titas told The Independent.
Twenty-four people were killed on the spot and more than 70 were injured, as the factory collapsed, following a huge explosion and subsequent fire, three days before Eid-ul-Azha. After the accident, there was an allegation that Titas’s gas connection was the main cause for the fire.
Thirty-five deceased were identified. Of the 11 missing or unidentified, four are presumed to be still under the rubble, whilst seven of the recovered bodies were burnt beyond recognition.
