Though Barisal City Corporation had fixed 156 slaughtering spots in the city, no cattle had been sacrificed in maximum spots during Eid-ul-Azha. Even city mayor and other counselors and BCC officials also sacrificed their animals in their own places. Acknowledging the facts Dipak Lal Mrridha, conservancy officer of BCC, said the corporation’s initiative to keep the slaughtering of animals confined to some fixed zones failed due to the distances from actual residential areas and the absence of water supply.
He, however, expressed satisfaction over the lukewarm response to the first-ever initiative of designating spots for slaughtering sacrificial animals in the city. It may be mentioned that most city dwellers sacrificed their animals on open city roads. City dwellers claimed that the absence of a proper campaign also contributed to the failure of the initiative.
The BCC has also failed to clean up the garbage and offal, resulting from the slaughter of sacrificial animals, from the roads even after 50 hours.
The Independent correspondent, on a visit to the city streets, found piles of garbage emanating foul odor in over 400 lanes of the city on Wednesday night. Some city residents termed the BCC’s claim of completely cleaning up the city as pure hogwash.
Dipak Lal Mrridha, conservancy officer of the BCC, said they tried their best to clean up the city. He said the BCC had sent out cleaning vehicles immediately after the Eid jammat to clean the blood and entrails of the sacrificed animals. Over 440 workers, with 21 conservancy trucks and 160 trolleys and vans, are using 1,500 kg of bleaching powder and Savlon to clean all the 58 sq. km area under the BCC within 24 hours.
