Tanners association and leather goods traders yesterday jointly announced that tannery owners will buy cow hide in Dhaka at maximum Tk 50 per square foot while goat at maximum Tk 20, reports BSS. They will buy cow hide with salt at maximum Tk 40 per square foot outside of Dhaka while the price of goat hide has been fixed at Tk 20 and for 'Baqra' goat at Tk 15. Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters' Association (BFLLFEA) chairman Mohiuddin Mahmud Mahin declared the prices of hides of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Azha at a press conference at a hotel in the capital.
BFLLFEA, Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) and Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association (BHSMA) jointly arranged it. BTA President Shahin Ahmed said this year the prices of hides have been reduced 10 per cent than that of previous year due to 35 per cent price fall in the world market.
In last year, he said, the price of per square foot cow hide was Tk 50-55 in Dhaka and Tk 40-45 outside Dhaka while the price of per square foot goat hide was Tk 20-22, per square foot 'Baqra goat' was Tk 15-17 and for buffalo hide was Tk 35-40. He also urged the government to take proper steps to prevent the poaching of leathers and skins.
"Leather is our national asset. We are very much sincere to flourish the tannery industry.
All will have to be conscious about waste management and proper conservation of others issues for development of this sector considering its contribution to national economy," he said.
Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association (BHSMA) Chairman Md Delwar Hossain called for spreading salt properly on hides to maintain quality. He called for using 8-12 kilogram of salt in a cow hide and 1-1.25 kilogram of salt in a goat hide FOR preservation.
