At least 19 people were killed in ‘crossfire’ in August alone, Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR) said in a report yesterday. Among the deceased, 10 were killed in police ‘crossfire’ while 8 died during ‘crossfire’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and 1 was killed in a ‘crossfire’ with joint forces, the rights body said. Besides, 5 militants were killed in anti-militancy drives conducted by law enforcers. Expressing concerns over such deaths, the rights watchdog said the human rights situation in the country did not improve. Data from the research cell of BSEHR also reveals that 26 children were killed in August. On August 5, a youngster named Rasel Uddin, 16, was beaten to death allegedly for raising allegation of theft against another villager in Chapainawabganj. On August 12, a woman killed her two children in Basabo are of the capital. Also, at least 47 people (13 male and 34 female) committed suicide during the last month, said the report. It mentioned that the incidents of suicide took place mostly due to family disputes, failure in love affairs and as a result of sexual assault.
