Teachers, BCL men face off at SUST

A section of pro-Awami teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) under the banner of "Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parisad’ and BCL unit of the university under the banner of ‘General Students’ faced-off over the issue of the university’s Vice-chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuyan’s resignation.
Sources said, the agitated teachers continued sit-in programme in front of the VC office from Tuesday morning demanding resignation of VC as a pre-schedule programme for the nine consecutive days.
On the others hand, the BCL activists started sit-in programme near the administrative building at around 10am demanding to unlock the VC office and maintaining educational atmosphere on the campus.
Hearing the news, Professor Md Rashed Talukder, SUTA president Md Kabir Hossain, Proctor Kamruzzaman Chowdhury rushed to the spot and ensured them to solve the problem soon. Later the students suspended their sit-in programme at arround 11:30 am.
The students said they would continue their sit-in programme if the VC office is not unlocked.
Agitated teachers felt insecure as BCL took face-to-face position, said Syed Samsul Alam, convenor of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parisad’.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid sent a letter to SUST Teachers Association president Prof Kabir Hossain asking him to solve the problem for a better educational environment on the campus with discussion.
Prof Kabir Hossain confirmed receiving the letter on Tuesday.
Mentionable that Bangladesh Chhatra League of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit staged a demonstration on the campus from Monday demanding to unlock the VC office.
The BCL activists under the banner of ‘General Students’ brought out a procession from in front of campus food court at around 12:30 pm where more than two hundreds students took part.
The procession was paraded the whole campus and ended at the same place. They were seen chanting slogans against the teachers who staged demonstration demanding resignation of the university’s vice-chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuyan.
