14 cows missing in trawler capsize
Manikganj: A trawler carrying a consignment of 22 cattle capsized in the Padma River in Daulatdia upazila on Sunday morning, leaving 14 cows missing, reports UNB.
Mohosin Uddin, in-charge of Daulatdia ferry terminal police outpost, said the Patuaria terminal bound trawler from Daulatdia with two boatmen, four traders and 22 cattle on board capsized in the river after being hit by a ferry around 7am. The boatmen and traders managed to swim ashore while the cattle fell into the river.
Of the cattle, eight were rescued with the help of local people.
Man held with pethidine
Chuadanga: Detectives in a drive arrested an alleged drug peddler from Daulatdia bus stand area of the district town in possession of 50 ampoules of pethidine on Saturday night, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Rafiq, 38, son of Fazlul Haque, a resident of Chunuripara of the upazila.
Amir Abbas, sub-inspector of the Detective Branch of police (DB), Chuadanga, said on secret information a team of the DB conducted a drive in the area around 9.30pm and arrested Rafiq along with 50 ampoules of pethidine.
A case was filed in this connection.
One arrested with phensidyl
NAOGAON: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (in a drive arrested a drug peddler and recovered 2,000 bottles of phensidyl from Chaknamaju area under Porsha upazila yesterday afternoon, reports BSS.
The arrested person was Ayub Ali, resident of Bankpara area in Bogra Sadar upazila.On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive in the area and arrested Ayub and recovered the phensidyl after searching a private car, said RAB-5 Camp Commander Major Hasan Arafat.
A case was filed in this connection.
Indian cloths seized in Khulna
KHULNA: A joint patrol team of Bangladesh Coast Guard and Khulna Customs recovered a huge quantity of illegal Indian sarees and three pieces from Shialgati Bridge area under Dumuria Police Station early yesterday, reports BSS.
Operation Officer of West Zone Coast Guard Lieutenant M Fariduzzaman Khan said based on secret information, they conducted a drive in the area and recovered 200 pieces of Indian sarees and 305 three pieces worth about Tk 50 lakh in abandoned condition.
The recovered clothes will be handed over to Khulna Customs House, he said.
355-kg fish fry released
KURIGRAM: Phulbari Upazila Fisheries Department yesterday released 355-kg of fish fry in 13 different water bodies in the upazila, reports BSS. District fisheries officer Zillur Rahman released the fish fries at a special programme as the chief guest.
Zila firm manager Kalimuddin, upazila fisheries officer Mahmudul Hasan, upazila agriculture officer Mahabub Rashid, upazila vice-chairman Rafikul Islam and Muktijoddha Commander Mojibar Rahman, were present on the occasion, among others. The upazila fisheries official said local species of fish fries were released.
5 robbers arrested in Jamalpur

Police in a drive arrested five robbers from the district town early yesterday.
The arrested people are identified as Al Sadik, 18, Nazmul Hassan, 24, Nazmul Haque, 19, Al-Amin, 25, and Zakirul, 21. All are residents of Melandah upazila of the district.
On a tip-off, a team of police from Sadar police station conducted a drive in Basakpara Kali Mondir area and arrested them while they were taking preparation to commit robbery in the area at 12:30 am, said Nasimul Islam, OC of Sadar police. Police also recovered local weapons from their possession.
A case was filed in this connection.
Anti-militancy human chain
NARAIL: Narail district lawyers association staged an anti-militancy procession and human chain on Court Road in the district town yesterday, reports BSS.
Former Member of Parliament advocate Saif Hafijur Rahman Khokan, general secretary of district Awami League advocate Siddique Ahmed, president of district lawyers association advocate Saurabh Hossein Biswas, advocates Iqbal Hossein Sikdar, Nazrul Islam and Rama Rani, among others, spoke at the human chain programme.

Woman killed in road crash
DINAJPUR: A woman was killed and her husband and son were injured as a truck hit a motorbike at Mangolpur under Biral upazila, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Bulbuli Begum, 30, wife of Faisal Haque of Kasba village in Sadar upazila.
Police said the accident occurred on Saturday night when a truck hit a motorbike in the area, leaving three motorbike riders injured. The injured were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where Bulbuli succumbed to her injuries yesterday morning.
Freedom fighter laid to rest
SATKHIRA: Veteran freedom fighter Abdul Hamid Sarder was laid to eternal rest with state honour at his family graveyard in Assasuni Upazila on Saturday, reports BSS.
Abdul Hamid died on Friday at Satkhira Sadar Hospital due to old-age complications at the age of 72, family
