Louhajang Channel opens to Ro Ro ferries

The Padma River channel at a bend on Louhajang was re-opened to heavy duty RO RO ferries, resuming their services after 3 pm yesterday carrying trucks and buses six days after the ferries became unable to negotiate the channel due to siltation causing shallow draft on the river. Sources at the BIWTC, that operates the ferry services, said the services resumed after they were suspended on August 22 as it became difficult to operate these ferries due to the shallow depth in the river at the bend. It was cleared yesterday after dredging by the BIWTA dredgers. The resumption of ferry services between Kewrakandi and Shimulia has helped clear a long row of trucks and buses waiting to cross the Padma River. The BIWTA sources said they had to request the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Authority to lend the services of the dredgers working on the river for construction of the bridge from the Chinese contractor.
