Snake-bite claims 9 lives in Jessore

At least nine people were reportedly died from snake-bite in Abhoynagar and Monirampur upazilas in Jessore in last 15 days, locals and local government representatives said. Besides, four babies also drowned in stagnant water in
the area.
According to local administration sources, 122 villages under the aforesaid two upazilas were inundated. The affected villagers took shelters at 45relief and rehabilitation camps being displaced in flood water.
Two held with 20-kg hemp
RANGPUR: Two drug traffickers were arrested with 20-kg
smuggled hemp from Paschim Ramkhana Singerbhita
village in Nageswari upazila yesterday afternoon, reports BSS.
On a tip-off, police conducted a raid at the house of one Khadem Ali in the village while the hemp was being packed for trafficking to other places.
"After searching the house, police seized 20-kg hemp and arrested drug traffickers Shafikul Islam, 28, and Abdul Hakim, 60, from the spot," Officer-in-Charge of Nageswari police Afzal Hossain said.
Owner of the house Khadem Ali, however, managed to escape the scene.

Two children drown in river

Two children drowned in Louhajang river in Baimhati area under Mirzapur upazila yesterday.
They are Jannatara, 9, daughter of Baimhati Adalotpara of Mirzapur municipality and Yasin, 6, son of Abdul Jalil, resident of Aukpara of Savar Upazila.
The children fell into the river and drowned due to
heavy current while they were playing on the bank of the river.
Golam Sarower, station manager of the Mirzapur Fire Service, said they rescued the children from the river and sent them to Kumudini Hospital where on duty doctors declared them dead.
Cattle trader killed in Kurigram
KURIGRAM: A cattle trader was killed and six others were injured as a cattle-laden human hauler turned turtle in Tempur Bazaar area on the Rajarhat-Tista road under Rajarhat upazila yesterday, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Lutfar Rahman, 50, a resident of Tabakpur village under Ulipur upazila.
Police said the accident occurred when a Rangpur-bound Nasiman loaded with cattle turned turtle and fell into the roadside ditch as a wheel of the vehicle got punctured. Cattle trader Lutfar died on the spot and the injured six persons were sent to a local hospital.
Officer-in-charge of Rajarhat police Abdur Rashid confirmed the incident.
Touchstone statue recovered
MUNSHIGANJ: Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) recovered a touchstone statue of Lord Shiva weighing nearly 141-kg from Maikpara Beel under Radikhal union in Srinagar upazila on Friday evening, reports BSS.
On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid in the area and recovered the statue from the Beel, RAB official said.
The cost of 141-kg statue estimated to be about Tk 3 crore.
4 houses gutted in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: Four houses were gutted by fire at Voulaganj village under Debiganj upazila of the district yesterday afternoon, reports BSS.
The fire originated from one Aminul Islam's kitchen room and soon engulfed three adjacent houses.
A motorbike, computer, huge stock of paddy and jute and furniture were burnt to ashes by the fire.
Firefighters of Panchagarh rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control with the help of the locals.
The damage is estimated to be at about Tk 12 lakh.
32 arrested in Satkhira
SATHKHIRA: Police in special drives arrested 32 drug peddlers and other accused and recovered 60 bottles of banned
phensidyl syrup, 20 pieces of Yaba tablets and 200grams of hemp from seven upazilas in the district on Friday,
reports BSS.
Sources concerned said during the drives, Satkhira
Sadar police arrested 12 persons and Kalaroa Police held 9 persons. They were arrested in connections with drug peddling.
Meanwhile, Patkelghata police arrested one person, Assasuni police two persons, Tala police two persons, Kaliganj police two persons, Shyamnagar police two persons and Debhata police two persons during the period on
various charges.
Cheques distributed among journalists in Bogra
BOGRA: Cheques under Journalists Welfare Trust given by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were distributed
yesterday among the poor journalists of the district, reports BSS.
Abdul Mannan, MP, distributed the cheques among ten distressed journalists.
