Mir Quasem seeks
further deferral

War crimes convict and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali yesterday filed another petition with the Supreme Court seeking a three-week deferment of hearing on his review petition filed seeking reconsideration of his death penalty in war crimes case. A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha kept ‘the review petition along with an adjournment petition filed by Mir Quasem Ali seeking three weeks time’ in today’s cause list of the apex  court for hearing. Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, counsel for Mir Quasem Ali, said that the adjournment petition was filed as he could not take preparation for moving the review petition before the apex court as counsel Barrister Mir Ahmmad Bin Quasem, son of Quasem Ali, has gone missing.
Mir Ahmmad Bin Quasem, who was an assistant lawyer in the case, had kept all the records and documents of the case in his custody, he said.
Earlier on July 24, Quasem Ali had filed a petition with the SC seeking a two-month deferment of hearing his review petition for Khandker Mahbub’s taking preparation.
In response to the time petition, the apex court had, on July 25, adjourned till August 24 (today) the hearing on the review petition filed by Mir Quasem Ali seeking reconsideration of his death penalty awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in war crimes case. On June 19, Mir Quasem filed the review petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
