Cooperative society head flees with Tk 2 crore

The head of a  cooperative society, which has earned name and fame during the last few years, has suddenly disappeared with Tk two crores collected from its clients in Chandpur.
‘Deshpriti Multi-purpose Samabaya Samity’ was located in a rented house at Mohamaya Bazaar.  About six years ago, one Hasan Mahmud of Loderhgaon village of sadar upazila along with some other people founded the samity with a view to giving financial benefit to the rural people at an attractive rate. Their campaign attracted men and women of Lodergaon, Bimolergaon, Ronbolia, Dashergaon, Chatontor, Rampur union and a few villages in the upazila.
But suddenly the samity’s chief Hasan Mahmud disappeared on June 13.
When contacted on cell phone, he said he has come to Benapole to go to India. “One day, I will come back, Goodbye’’, he said.
Executive members of the samity -– Hasan Mahmud’s sister Ferdousi Begum, Borhan Uddin Miji, Jahid Haji, Abdul Hannan Talukder, Mafij Bepary, Khalilur Rahman Khokan – said they do not know the whereabouts of Hasan Mahmud and that they cannot do anything about it. Hasan Mahmud was the sole authority of the samity, they said,
Saleha Begum, a client of the samity, broke down and said she deposited an amount of Tk 7 lakhs recently with this samity.
Md Ali Ahammad, of Shokdi Panchgaon village, said he deposited an amount of Tk five lakh on January 12, 2012. He used to get Tk 10 thousand per month as benefit from the deposit. But he has been denied any benefit since last October. Investigation Officer of sadar model police station Arisul Huque said, “I can’t exactly say anything about this matter at the moment”.
