A police constable was killed during a clash between police and agitated local people after a man, chased by police during a raid, drowned in a pond in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj yesterday.
Inspector Shah Md Manzur Quader, officer in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station, confirmed the incident and said police went there to conduct a raid against a drug trader.
The deceased policeman was identified as Arifur Rahman, 35 while the drowned man was identified as Abdul Matin, 40.
According to local sources, a police team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Fakrul Islam raided a location in Raijdia area under Sonargaon Upazila in Narayanganj district yesterday afternoon. Getting chased by police, Matin tried to escape and fell into a pond and drowned as he did not know how to swim.
As the news spread, local people gathered in the area and chased the police team. They also threw brickbat towards police that injured several policemen. Constable Arifur Rahman got seriously injured and died during the clash. Police claimed that Matin was a drug peddler, but locals said he was a drug addict and ran a betel leaf shop at Naripool.
