About 3,000 weavers of Jamdani palli in Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi have been passing busy hours ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr .
Daulatpur and adjoining villages of Monohardi upazila have worn a festive look with the craftsmen busy creating designs on the exclusive brand of sari round-the clock.
Sales have been picked up due to higher demand for hand-woven Jamdani sari, shopkeepers say. A stable yarn prices also have made the weavers hopeful of higher profit this year.
A total of 200 Jamdani weaving factories of Daulatpur and its adjoining villages are engaged in production of Jamdani sari.
Jamdani saris are supplied to different districts, including Dhaka, Sylhet, Narsingdi, Chittagon ,Rjshahi, Khulna, Comilla, Feni, Noakhali, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Moulavibazar, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Gazipur, Moymenshingh, Jamalpur   every week during the Eid season.
Power outages often hamper the production; but the weavers said they are still happy due to higher demand for their products.
Power supply remains cutoff for four to five hours every day, said Rafiqul Islam, owner of Islam Weaving Factory in Daulatpur village. He operates six handlooms in his factory.
A good market price of the Jamdani sari has made the business profitable, said weaver Abdur Rahim of the same village.
About 200 weaving families are now very busy producing Jamdani saris ahead of the festival.
The incessant rains for the last seven days of Ramzan also hampered the production of Jamdani sari. But mostly marginal weavers have been affected for lack of necessary capital, Dulal Mia, an owner, said. Five weavers are working in his factory but they cannot come regularly due to continuous rain, so the production has been hampered, he added.
The price of Jamdani sari ranges between Tk 5,000 and Tk 25,000 depending on the design, he said further.
“The price of a lesser quality sari about Tk 7,000 and the finer one costs Tk 30,000,” said Jashim uddin, another factory owner.
Two workers together take about ten days to produce one piece of sari. Jamdani weaving factory owners have urged the government to allot 25 bighas of land on the side of Monohardi-Dhaka road for setting up their showrooms.
