Incessant shower coupled with squally wind crippled public life in Barisal and Narayanganj cities with many of their low-lying areas being inundated.
Staff Reporter from Barisal adds: Barisal Met office recorded 246.6 millimeter rainfall in the district within 24 hours yesterday. That was the second record rainfall in the last 48 years.
According to the Barisal met office, highest 258.3mm rainfall was recorded in Barisal town within 24 hours in the 1967.
The daylong monsoon downpour paralysed normal life in Barisal city on Thursday while rainwater flooded all the corners of the city. Barisal City Corporation, however, faced the problems with its strong steps and was able to release the rainwater from the flooded city area before sunset.
The drains in the city were cleaned often to face the situation using over 150 day labourers and improve the condition during heavy rainfall.
However, water logging in different parts of the city roads and low lying areas was created due to filling and grabbing of canals, lack of proper drainage and sewerage system and absence of city protection embankment.
Barisal City Corporation mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal said the city first time faced this type of heavy rainfall within a short time. “It was our achievement that somehow we were able to flash out rainwater from the city areas,” he added.
During rainfall, BCC mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal visited the city roads with his all officials and ordered them to clean out the rainwater as soon as possible.
Later BCC workers opened all the 12 gates of the sewerage water and were able to remove rainwater from maximum points.
But till filing this report, Barisal city could not be totally free from the rainwater. While visiting different parts of the city, it was found that low laying areas were still under rainwater.
The city-sky will remain cloudy with low to medium rainfall and gusty wind with 15-20 Km per hour for next one or two days, said Pronab Saha, in-charge of local weather forecasting office.
Pronob said only 1412mm rainfall was recorded here in the last year while highest 2312mm rainfall was recorded in 2013 and lowest 983mm rainfall recorded in the year 2008.
All fishing boats and trawlers have been asked to take shelter in safe places till weather improves and weather signal no.2 has been hoisted in the coastal region, the weather official said.
Correspondent, Narayanganj reports: Rainfall created water logging in some areas of the city and on its outskirts due to improper drainage system.
A large number of people have remained marooned as there is no outlet in many areas for the rainwater to fall into canals and river.
Though Naryanganj is a river surrounded district, maximum canals are being grabbed by people and thus there is no way for water to go into the river.
Inhabitants in some areas of the city, including inside of Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra (DND) embankment, are suffering untold miseries as knee-deep water has submerged the roads.
Masdair area in the city, Kashipur union adjacent to the city and DND and some other areas have been inundated by heavy rainfall.
The conscious people blame two major causes for the flash flood, one is improper drainage system and the other is grabbing of canals.
Samsuddin, inhabitant of Kashipur union council of Sadar upazila, who has been left marooned by flooding, alleged that a road of his area is under knee-deep water.
The Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Dhaleswari and Balu rivers have kept swelling.
