RAJSHAHI: Political and social commitment has become an urgent need to combat illicit trafficking of drugs along with its trading and abusing to protect people and the young generation in particular, speakers at a post-human-chain discussion said yesterday, reports BSS. They said 80 per cent of the drug addicts are the age group of 15 to 30 in the country. So, there is no alternative to adopt measures of anti- smuggling of drugs. At present the injecting drug users were creating grave concern among the government and non-government organisations and these people were in high HIV/AIDS risk. The observation came at a meeting held at Nanking Dabar hall in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking- 2015.
District Administration and Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) jointly organised the programme discussing ways and means on how to free the city from the curse of abusing of drugs. ‘Our Live Our Communities without Drugs’ was the main theme of the day.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Munir Hossain addressed the discussion as chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury in the chair. During his keynote presentation, Mukul Joyti Chakma, Deputy Director of DNC, said the law enforcement agencies alone isn't capable to combat the social disease but community participation coupled with family and social contribution is very important to this end. BGB Battalion Commander Lt Col Shahjahan Siraj, SP Nisarul Arif, RAB Major Kamruzzaman Pavel, Civil Surgeon Dr Abdus Sobhan, also spoke as special guests.
Staff reporter adds from Khulna: Directorate of Narcotics Control Department, Khulna Circle and Khulna district administration jointly organised discussion marking the day at the auditorium of Officers’ Club in the city yesterday. Administrator of Khulna Zila Parishad, also president of Awami League, Khulna district unit Sheikh Harunur Rashid was the chief guest. Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Md Mostafa Kamal presided over the function.
Speakers called for building strong resistance against illegal drug trading and trafficking to protect the people particularly young generation from its deadly grip. They also underscored the need for intensifying drive against drug peddlers.
