Dhaka University (DU) authorities is going to announce its annual budget of Tk 425.50 crore for the fiscal year 2015-2016 today, which was passed at the DU syndicate meeting on June 16.
This year, only Tk 4.5 crore which is only 1.06 percent of the whole money has been allocated for the research purposes of the university.
In this regard, DU Bio-medical and Physics department Chairman Prof Siddique-e Rabbani said research is the main work of a university and new era of knowledge should be created in different sectors through research.
But it is really disheartening that there has been earmarked very poor money in the research sector this year.
“Teachers are also responsible in this regard as without being dedicated to research, they are always busy in consultancy of different institutions,” he added. He also suggested that the DU authorities should follow some strict and clear directions about research so that teachers pay attention to research works.
This year, the total amount of the budgetary allocation for the university is Tk 425.50 crore and most of the money will be sanctioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which is Tk 371. 15 crore.
On the other hand, Tk 39 crore will be provided by the authorities with a deficit of Tk 15.39 crore. DU accounts director Asraf Uddin said every year there is some deficit in the budget and the money is sanctioned in different sectors from the UGC’s allocation.
UGC has asked the university to increase its own income; but whenever the authorities want to raise tuition fees, students go for movement. A student pays Tk25 only every month as his/her fee, he added. Teachers of different faculties of the university also demanded that allocation in research sector be increased though the money allocated this year is a little bit higher than that of the previous year.
