Land grabbers are accelerating public sufferings by filling up the Rupnagar-Duaripara canal at Pallabi in the capital by constructing buildings and dumping wastes, blocking the drainage system, said Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Annisul Haque.
Annisul Haque, accompanied by WASA officials, visited Rupnagar, Duaripara and Pallabi in Mirpur to see the water logging situation in the area, which has created public hazards.
During the visit, Annisul said, “The land grabbers are accelerating civic hazards by constructing buildings and throwing garbage on the Rupnagar-Duaripara canal at Pallabi. The civil society should not blame the city corporation only rather everybody should be more conscious to keep our society habitable,”
“Water logging in the city area is not a new problem. The problem has been created for building makeshift houses on the canal, obstructing the drainage outlets,” he said.
The natural canal carries sewage and storm water of West Shewrapara, Kazipara, Monipur, Mirpur Section 2 and Rupnagar residential areas, Duaripara and Alokdi villages, and discharges them into the river Turag. The canal has virtually turned into a sewerage line at several places near Manipur and is now facing massive waste accumulation in Rupnagar residential area.
Locals alleged the influential land grabbers are destroying not only the drainage system and environment but also law and order in the area.
