Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yetsreday urged all to work together along with the government in light of constitution and spirit of liberation to take Bangladesh forward as a democratic and non-communal country, reports BSS. She made the call speaking as the chief guest at Jahanara Imam Commemorative Lecture at Dhanmondi in the city marking the 21st death anniversary of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam, said an official release.
All would have to work together to develop a democratic and progressive society in the spirit of Liberation War to build a “Sonar Bangla” as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the speaker said.
She said holding trial of war criminals is a must to build a just society. “The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina started the process of trying the war criminals and the verdicts are already being executed. Death penalties of two war criminals have been executed, which is a big achievement of Sheikh Hasina government,” she added. The speaker stressed the need for building a prosperous Bangladesh upholding the spirit of liberation.
She also called for alleviating poverty and removing rich-poor disparity to reach the benefit of economic growth to every family. Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee acting President Shahriar Kabir delivered the welcome address while Chhayanaut President Prof Sanjida Khatun delivered Jahanara Imam Commemorative Lecture titled “Bangladesh’s Cultural Movement (1961-1971)”.
Presided over by Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Vice-President Shaheed Jaya Shyamoli Nasrin Chowdhury, the function was also addressed by Udichi Shilpi Goshthi President Kamal Lohani, Prof Ajoy Roy and Prof Muntasir Mamun. Chhayanaut and Prof Ajoy Roy were awarded with Jahanara Imam Smriti Padak at the function.
