‘Criminal’ killed in police ‘crossfire’

A listed top criminal was killed in a crossfire between police and his cohorts early yesterday at Pahardanga village under Kalia Upazila of Narail. One shutter gun, four rounds of bullets and two machetes were seized from the spot while four policemen were injured, said police. The deceased was identified as Mizan Kazi, 34, hailing from Bagudanga village under Kalia upazila of the district. Naragati Police Officer In-charge Mahbubur Rahman said, Mizan, an accused in several criminal cases, was arrested from Gopalganj town on Saturday night. When a police team was bringing him to the Naragati police station, accomplices of Mizan opened fire on police and tried to snatch Mizan. Police returned fire and at one stage Mizan got shot and died on the spot. The OC also said that Mizan is a top listed criminal in the district with over a dozen cases against him including those of arms and robbery with Kalia and Naragati police stations in Narail and Mollahat police in Bagerhat. The body was sent to Narail Sadar Hospital for autopsy, the police officer added.
