Unloading suspended at outer anchorage

The unloading operations at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port remained suspended for the last four days due to the inclement weather coupled with heavy downpour. The unloading activities remained suspended as 36 lighter vessels, laden with around 50,000 metric tonnes of goods, including wheat, cement clinkers remained stranded at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port. The mother vessels with more than 190 metre length and 9 metre draft cannot anchor at Chittagong Port. Therefore, the mother vessels have to station at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port. The goods are unloaded from mother vessels to small vessels (lighter vessels) through the use crane. The importers have to rent lighter vessels from Water Transport Cell (WTC) for unloading goods from mother vessels to lighter ones. The officials of the WTC said that the importers hardly rented lighter vessels from the cell due to inclement weather. Therefore, the unloading operations suspended for the last couple of days and many lighter vessels remained stranded in 16 private ghats (unloading stations) of the Karnaphuli in Chittagong. Meanwhile, the operations at the Chittagong port were also disrupted for the last few days due to the torrential rains, coupled with gusty winds and strong current.
