Freedom fighter killed in ‘police assault’

A freedom fighter succumbed to injuries after being allegedly assaulted by police at Jamalpur railway station platform yesterday. The victim,Md Abdul Bari, 60, of Hatchandra village under Jamalpur sadar upazila, was a former army personnel.
Sources said, Jamalpur railway authorities set up a check post at the station to prevent passengers travelling without tickets. Police yesterday detained Md Mazharul Haque Babu, son of the deceased freedom fighter, for boarding a train without ticket.
Babu, a student of Rajshahi University, then called Bari over phone, who got engaged in an altercation with the railway policemen after reaching the spot. At one stage, the agitated freedom fighter sustained head injuries after he fell on the platform being pushed by the on duty policemen.
 He was rushed to Jamalpur General Hospital and later shifted to the CMH, Mymensingh where he succumbed to injuries at noon.
Sources at Jamalpur General Hospital said Bari was admitted to their facility with a head injury and profuse bleeding.  Learning about Bari’s death, local freedom fighters agitated in front of the station and demanded punishment for the perpetrators.
The local administration and the railway authorities formed two separate committees to probe the incident.
Two cops, including the officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Railway Police, were closed over the incident.
