Transport owners
charging higher fare

Bangladesh Passengers’ Welfare Association (BPWA) has alleged that transport owners have been charging extra fare of Tk 3,700 crore from home-bound passengers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, reports UNB. In a statement yesterday, BPWA said Tk 2,200 crore extra fare is being collected from bus passengers while Tk 1,200 crore from waterway passengers and about Tk 300 crore from rail passengers through black-marketing of train ticket. Citing the findings of an assessment report, BPWA secretary general Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury in the statement said transport owners are charging extra fare from home-goers from 26th Ramadan, increasing their plight. Despite repeated plea to the authorities concerned to take effective measures to shop anarchy in transport sector during Eid, he said, no pragmatic step is yet to be taken to check sufferings of home-bound passengers. Mozammel said Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is conducting drives at different bus stations, but these drives do not play any strong role to cut sufferings of people.
