2 killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

Two youths were killed and three police men were said to be injured in an alleged gunfight with the police in Jhenidah early yesterday. The ‘gunfight’ took place at Tetulbaria village under Naldanga Union of Jhenidah Sadar Upazila at about 2.30 AM, said police. Firearms, ammunition and bombs were also seized from their possession, the police said. The deceased were identified as Al Mahmud, 25, son of Rozob Ali of Bodonpur village under the district and Anis, 27, of Kushtia district. Additional Superintendent of Police in Jhenidah Azbahar Ali Sheikh said the police got information that a gang of criminals had gathered at Tetulbaria village to carry out subversive activities. When a police team reached the spot, the criminals opened fire at the police van leading to an exchange of fire. The gunfight continued for about 20 minutes and the two youths and three policemen were injured, said police. Later the police recovered the bullet hit bodies of two young men and seized a shooter gun, two rounds of ammunitions and five bombs. Three injured police men are sub inspector Prabir Kumar, constables Rabbi and Tarikul. They were rushed to Jhenidah Sadar hospital, said police. The dead bodies were taken to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for post mortem, the police said. Meanwhile, family members of Anis claimed that he was picked up by plainclothes policemen about two weeks ago and he remained missing since then.
