Customs officials seized around one lakh illegally imported ATM cards at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday. The cards, marked as of City Bank, were brought to Dhaka on a Singapore Airways flight on June 26, airport sources said. Acting on a tip, officials of preventive team of Dhaka Custom House conducted a drive in the cargo village around 10am and seized the cards kept inside a trolley in front of gate-2, they said. Rezaul Karim, Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Custom House, said those cards are suspected to have been brought for use in financial crimes. The seized cards have been inscribed with ‘City Bank’, he added. “However the name and address of the importers are not real. A fake name and address is used,” said Rezaul, adding that tax of around Tk 40 lakh was evaded through the consignment. When contacted, Mashrur Arefin, Additional Managing Director of City Bank, told The Independent that they had ordered the ATM cards from an international digital security provider company named ‘Gemalto’. A local company named “Instrumental” was appointed by City Bank to bring those cards from Gemalto. “We are not taking responsibility for the matter,” he said. In March this year, 1,000 fake ATM cards brought in five cartoons by DHL courier from Hong Kong was seized at Shahjalal International Airport.
